Medical tourism
A holiday and medical treatment this summer?
This is the term used to describe the growing practice of traveling across international borders to recieve healthcare. It also means healthcare providers traveling across international borders to give healthcare.
The reason that medical tourism has become so popular is the high cost of healthcare and long wait times for certain procedures when it comes to things like cosmetic surgery abroad. A person can go to other countries and get a procedure done at times for one tenth of what it would cost at home. Sometimes this even includes your stay and airfare.
Of course there are always risks associated with medical tourism, because you are going across borders to other countries, some have different infectious diseases and viruses. If you havent lived in the country then your body may not have built up and immunity to these, and can be dangerous for people with weaken immune systems from sickness.
You must also be aware that the quality of post-operative care may be very different and vary dramatically, depending on where you go for care, especially when it comes to things like dentistry abroad. Traveling long distances and being in flight for a long time after surgery can cause complications as well, such as blood clots in the legs. To minimize these problems its often advised that people make a small vacation out of the trip and spend a few days resting and recovering from surgery before taking a long flight back home.
There are several associations which help place patients with doctors that are reputable. They can set up everything that you need. They are set up with hospital, healthcare providers, insurance companies and medical travel facilitaters. Depending on what you need to have done, there are many providers all over the world. A medical tourism association can help you go to the best facilities to have the surgery done by an approved surgeon and facility at a significantly reduced cost.
