Healthy smiles

In order to have healthy smiles, you must have healthy teeth. There is a jungle in there. Live bacteria live in your mouth, on your teeth and tongue. Most of the bacteria that lives in your mouth is not harmful. But there are certain types of bacteria that can attach to your teeth. If these are not removed they grow until a colony forms. More bacteria attach to the already growing colony on your teeth and this is called plaque. This can cause cavities.

The outside covering of your teeth is enamel, its very hard and contains calcium. The acids that are in plaque, will break down the enamel on your teeth and cause cavities. It is important to have good dental hygene, brush your teeth often to remove this plaque. If it has already become hard you can go to your dentist and have this removed before it causes cavities. It is also important that you get plenty of flouride. This can be found in drinking water, toothpaste and mouthwash. As flouride makes the enamel of the teeth harder.

There are 5 steps to a healthy smile:
Visit your dentist for cleanings and checkups
Eat a well balanced diet
Floss at least once a day
Brush at least once a day with a flouride toothpaste.
Watch your gums for signs of redness or infection.
